New Bereavement Leave Rights for Miscarriage: A Milestone for Bereaved Parents

We are happy to share a significant development in the support for parents experiencing pregnancy loss. In a change to the law made via The Employment Rights Bill, The UK Government has announced the legalisation of two weeks bereavement leave to parents who suffer a miscarriage before 24 weeks' gestation. The change is expected to pass its final stages in Parliament next week.

Losing a baby at any gestation is one of the hardest things to go through. This change acknowledges the profound emotional and physical impact of such losses and extends the rights previously reserved for stillbirths after 24 weeks.

We are really glad to be seeing the right type of support for bereaved parents in the workplace is being made a legal requirement amongst UK Employers.

This legislative advancement aligns with the goals of campaigns like the Miscarriage Association's "Leave for Every Loss," which has been instrumental in advocating for equitable bereavement leave. Their efforts highlighted the inadequacy of existing policies that often required individuals to resort to sick leave, or even annual leave failing to address the unique nature of grief associated with miscarriage. We believe this new legislation is a crucial step toward ensuring that parents receive the right support they need following the devastating loss of a baby.

We remain committed to supporting bereaved parents and families, and we welcome this development as a meaningful progression in acknowledging and addressing the profound impact of baby loss.
